songwriter heather is passionate about music but most of all she loves inspiring others and seeing them develop on their own instrument. “i enjoy all aspects of music and teaching it could be entering × stuart mcfadden co-owner, lecturer, guitarist, pianist stuart alongside heather is co-owner of bsm. stuart helps with the day-to-day running along with teaching both guitar and piano. along with instrumental grades stuart has also obtained many music qualifications such as a national diploma, hnd and ba (hons) in music. during these years studying it has prepared him to understand what is involved with student learning and development. some of the areas of music that he has studied are improvisation, composition, performance, history of music, theory, the art of teaching and recording techniques. stuart has been in serval bands and has performed live at various venues as well as session work. he has been teaching the guitar and piano for over 15 years across a variety of boards and syllabi which include lcm, abrsm, rockschool, trinity, rgt with a 100% pass rate in all boards/instruments. alongside his teaching duties at bsm, stuart has also been lecturing at the southern regional college, teaching a wide variety of subjects such as, improvisation, composing music, music business, aural perception skills, theory, working as a musical ensemble, popular music in charlotte o’hara strings tutor / co-ordinator charlotte is the string co-ordinator at bsm and has been teaching strings in ballymena school of music since 2013. charlotte began her musical journey when she was 8 years old. she was selected to play the violin in primary school and within a very short space of time, was hooked. charlotte began participating in festivals and ensemble work at a young age which gave her an insight to what music is about. the excitement of working with others who shared the passion for music only encouraged her further. after receiving a distinction at grade 8 violin at 16 she then went on to obtain distinctions at both grade 8 piano and grade 5 theory. charlotte continued her studies and completed an a level in music and whilst at university, achieved distinction in performance at dipabrsm and lrsm level in violin. charlotte has significant orchestral and ensemble experience. at university she played with the queen’s university symphony orchestra, the qub camerta chamber orchestra and the belfast sinfonia. charlotte has been awarded a seat with the ulster youth orchestra for four consecutive years which toured germany, playing in berlin’s prestigious konzerthaus. after playing with the uyo she has subsequently been selected to play with the ulster orchestra in several collaboration concerts. “i began teaching the violin in 2005 and studying music at the age of 7 learning classical flute through the welb. he then began learning bass guitar at 13 and finally moved on to double bass at 15. thomas graduated from queens university with a bachelor of music degree in 2012 and has performed in various venues around the country and other parts of the uk and europe which include, the proms in 2012 with the ulster youth orchestra as well as being invited as a guest double bass player for nyos 2013 uk tour. thomas was a member of the hofesh shechter company for their performances in londonderry during city of culture event and has teaches guitar to children and adults from beginner to advanced students. lee started playing guitar at the age of 13 having enjoyed rock music, the grunge explosion and the blues. recording “one small step” at the age of 17 (which later saw him accepted him into liverpool institute of performing arts) he then studied a national diploma in popular music. he has played in a variety of bands and has performed as a session musician both live and in the recording studio. grade 8 qualified, he has been teaching for a number of years at ballymena school of music. lee uses a selection of syllabi to teach from which includes rockschool, rgt and trinity as well as a selection of pop music of the students choice. a fan of such music greats as gary moore, thin lizzy, eric clapton, he continues to and percussion tutor “i have been teaching for 3 years now, and thoroughly enjoy it. i enjoy watching my pupil’s progress and passing on my knowledge to them, it’s a delight when a pupil learns something new and is inspired to continue with the drums and learn more about them. i am trained to teach rockschool and abrsm percussion grades.” while studying a level music matt achieved his grade 8 distinction for rockschool drum kit, abrsm percussion and earned a scholarship for the royal irish academy of music to study percussion and 4 mallet marimba under richard o’donnell, (principal percussionist of the rte symphony orchestra). matt has been awarded seats with the ulster youth orchestra, national youth orchestra of ireland, new irish orchestra and third carrickfergus brass band having performed in prestigious venues such as the ulster hall, waterfront hall and the royal albert hall in london to name a few. he plays regularly in a wedding band called mojo, jamming along with each other to covers – “its brilliant!.” along with performing live matt also has recording experience in the studio, playing for bluetree, saffyre and the new irish orchestra. “as a percussionist and drummer i have a lot of instruments in my toy box, this is one of the highlights of learning drums – all the different styles of music that you can play as well as all the different instruments such as cajon, drums, timpani, vibraphone, marimba, the list goes on.” matt’s musical taste is incredibly wide, he listens to everything and as much of it as he can. he loves playing along to red hot chili tutor kathryn joined the bsm team in 2013 as a vocal tutor for both children and adults. kathryn started singing lessons at the age of 11 and continued with them throughout high school and university. her mother encouraged her to continue with music which she is thankful for as she now teaches a topic that she is passionate about! while continuing with her singing and piano lessons kathyrn studied music from gcse level, to diploma level in musical theatre and classical singing. kathryn is a confident performer and she has sang at many weddings, functions and concerts which has taught her grammar school. i worked my way through the abrsm grades from 1-8 and also did grade 5 theory. the school music teacher forgot to put a flute in the store at the end of term when i was in sixth year and asked me to take it home and look after it over the summer holidays and bring it back in september. i took it home, got a book from the library and taught myself how to play! when i got back to school, the flute teacher said i was already playing at grade 4 standard so i worked my way through the rest of the abrsm grades, including grade 8. i also did gcse music and a level music and tutors in guitar and bass. gary’s earliest influences in music came from bands like kiss and ac/dc – so the obvious choice of instrument was guitar. since then gary’s interest has taken several turns, developing various styles including jazz and acoustic fingerstyle. “i began studying music at bmc in 2008 and continued at the university of ulster – specialising in performance and popular rebecca became interested in music at the very early age of 7. rebecca picked up the violin, piano, harp and took singing lessons gaining a diploma in classical singing along with grade 8 in musical theatre and violin. rebecca has graduated from the ulster university with an bmus (hons) after studying music at magee in derry. rebecca has been teaching for several years now along with performing as a singer at weddings, functions and even touring uk and europe with a company called dance of desire and performing in a carpenters cover band. scroll down examinations ballymena school of music holds accredited music board examinations three times a year for both its own students and external students. we not only prepare the students for the exam but also enter all of our students filling
